For the second year in a row, the Boston Bruins are facing familiar territory—a goaltending controversy that could force another offseason shake-up.
Last year, it was Linus Ullmark who found himself on the outside looking in. Jeremy Swayman made it known he was ready to take on the starter’s role, and with both goalies expecting around 55 starts in an 82-game season, something had to give. Ullmark was traded, and the crease became Swayman’s.
Fast forward a season, and Swayman made good on his ambition. He took the reins, started 58 games—a personal best—and solidified himself as the Bruins’ number one. He thrived under the heavier workload, silencing any doubts about whether he was built for the job.
But while Swayman rose, his backup, Joonas Korpisalo, found himself stuck watching from the bench far more than he’d hoped.
The veteran netminder suited up for just 24 games and didn’t hold back during the team’s breakup day.
I don’t think there’s any goalie in the league who’s really comfortable playing 20 to 25 games,
Korpisalo said bluntly.
And he made it clear he plans to challenge for more ice time.
I’m going to push for more games and we’ll see what happens.
Despite his frustration, Korpisalo remained steady all season, doing his job and staying focused when called upon.
I was pretty open when I got into the season, and always, you just try to put everything you have out there, make your mark to gain some playing time,
he explained.
But you just do what’s best for you every day, and try your best and work hard, and that way you might earn some more playing time.
But you know, sometimes not up to me [with] who’s going to play more. And whatever role it is, you do the best you can in that role.
Now, the Bruins face another decision. Swayman has proven he’s ready to be the guy. But keeping Korpisalo satisfied as a backup—especially one looking for a larger role—won’t be easy.
Boston already went through this once. If history repeats, the team might once again part ways with a talented goalie who wants more than the current setup allows.
What happens next could shape their entire offseason.
