Charlie Coyle’s move to the Colorado Avalanche was supposed to offer a fresh chapter. Instead, the former Bruins center is already facing questions about whether that chapter is closing quicker than expected.
Trade to Colorado hasn’t gone the way anyone hoped
When Charlie Coyle was dealt by the Boston Bruins at the trade deadline, the thinking was simple: Colorado gets depth and experience down the middle, and Coyle gets a shot at meaningful playoff hockey again.
But since arriving, the fit has been rocky. He hasn’t made much of an impact. And now, after a heated exchange with Nathan MacKinnon, there’s a real sense that his days in Colorado might be numbered.

On Daily Faceoff Live, NHL insider Frank Seravalli didn’t dance around it.

Soon after, fans picked up on something else, what looked like MacKinnon visibly yelling at Coyle during a game. It’s not a great look, especially for a guy still trying to find his place in a new room.
Nobody fits in Colorado wth lol. The MacKinnon screaming at him clip probably a good indicator though.
No one’s claiming this was a blowup. But in a high-intensity locker room like Colorado’s, little things matter. Especially when they play out under the spotlight.
The Avalanche just signed Brock Nelson, another veteran forward who occupies a similar role. Whether intentional or not, that move makes Coyle’s situation even murkier.
It doesn’t take a leap to see the writing on the wall.
Could Boston circle back?
Here’s the twist. If Coyle ends up on the move again, don’t rule out a return to Boston.
Don Sweeney has brought back players before, Jakub Lauko being a recent example, and with the Bruins looking for depth, the door might not be closed.
Coyle wasn’t a flashy name in Boston, but he was reliable.
Good on draws. Good in the room. The kind of guy who fits the Bruins’ DNA.
And sometimes, in this league, things come full circle.
